All charges against the actor and HIV activist have been dropped.
Jussie Smollett is innocent.
In a stunning turn of events, all charges related to the Empire actor filing allegedly false police reports and staging his own hate crime attack in January have been dropped.
The actor's lawyers reportedly alerted The Advocate magazine immediately after attending an emergency court hearing in Chicago on Tuesday morning.
The long-time HIV activist and former Plus magazine cover star's record has been wiped clean of the filings against him, according to his team. The actor still maintains that he was attacked by two men who yelled racist and homophobic epithets at the actor on the streets of Chicago.
Smollett's laywer said this turn of events is proof that all victims in any criminal investigation deserve to be treated as innocent until proven guilty.
"Jussie and many others were hurt by these unfair and unwarranted actions. This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion," attorney Patricia Brown Holmes said in a statement.
"That is wrong."
