Supreme's New Leigh Bowery-Inspired Line Benefits HIV Cause
Leigh Bowery, legendary performance artist and nightlife fixture, is the center of Supreme's next collection, the brand recently announced. The streetwear label, which is famed for its collaborations and "drops," has released images of a capsule collection featuring imagery of the performer in all of his multi-colored glory.
As they note on their blog, Bowery did a short stint at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology pursuing a fashion design degree before moving to London in 1980. There he became a mainstay of the nightlife scene, known for channeling that dazzling fashion acumen into a variety of iconic looks that are still referenced today. At the time the impact was so great that not only did he help to shift what others were wearing in nightlife, but he was hired by Michael Clark to design costumes for his dance company.
Bowery's performances were dazzling, putting on landmark shows at Wigstock and other popular venues. And while his legacy and brilliance will always live on in culture, Supreme has attempted to commemorate it with a series of hoodies and shirts. A portion of proceeds from the range will benefit Visual AIDS (an org that supports artists living with HIV) — Bowery died of complications related to AIDS in 1994. The collection is being released today as an online exclusive.
