On World Blood Donor Day last month, the blood of gay, polysexual, and transgender men was projected on the High Line’s 14th Street passage in New York City as part of a day long #BloodEquality event that kicked off this unique social media campaign featuring a film, artwork, photos, blood donations, and video essays from gay and bi men from around the globe.
According to Blood Equality organizers, medical facilities must turn away more than 615,000 pints of blood each year in the United States — blood that could help save the lives of more than a million people — simply because the donors are gay or bisexual men or transgender women. Since he policies in place are not based on science,
Blood Equality was launched in partnership with Gay Men’s Health Crisis and Blood Mirror Project to "stop the discrimination against prospective donors and allow everyone an equal opportunity to donate blood."
Earlier this year, artist Jordan Eagles enlisted a group of 50 HIV-negative, gay PrEP advocates to donate a tube of their blood in protest of the Food and Drug Administration’s discriminatory policy, which bans sexually-active gay and bisexual men from donating blood, unless they have been celibate for a full year. This blood was added to Eagles’ evolving sculpture Blood Mirror, a seven-foot-tall monolith in which the viewers can see themselves reflected in the blood of the donors that has been encased and fully preserved.
Activist and filmmaker Leo Herrera documented the blood drives and interviews with the men for an original political art film, also titled Blood Mirror.
The 50 men who donated their blood for Blood Mirror are from many generations and backgrounds, ranging in age from mid-20s through mid-60s. Since these men cannot donate their blood to save lives — due to the FDA’s discriminatory policy — they’ve chosen to peacefully protest by donating their blood for art.
Forty-six of these men chose to participate in the Blood Equality campaign, a collaboration between GMHC, FCB Health, and the artists. Images of the men from the campaign, photographed by Harold Julian, are shared here in this gallery.
“It doesn't matter if you are gay, straight, male, female, young, old, or where in the world you were born, this is both an equality and science issue, that affects us all on so many levels. We have the ability to save lives and do what’s right,” says Eagles.
Herrera adds, “It’s bad science and it’s prejudice. The belief that gay men are inherently prone to disease is the equivalent to racial phrenology, striking at the fragile ability to view ourselves as healthy and ‘clean.’”
