The cast of producer Ryan Murphy's upcoming Broadway revival of the seminal 1968 play The Boys in the Band by Mart Crowley is probably the most buzzed about LGBT project since Angels in America. Directed by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello, the cast of the highly anticipated show reads like a veritable Who's Who of gay Hollywood, and includes out A-listers Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, and Jim Parsons.
The play and its focus on a group of gay friends in the pre-Stonewall era was largely panned by the LGBT community for perpetuating gay stereotypes, but has slowly been embraced by subsequent generations weaned on TV shows like Queer As Folk; and it serves as a glimpse into the largely invisible life of gay men in the 1960s.
In a deft marketing move the The AIDS Memorial posted a photo on Instagram and Facebook of the entire cast wearing their tees with a note from Bomer that reads: “Our entire cast of The Boys in the Band are so moved and inspired by these stories of the beautiful men and women that we lost to the plague during those dark years. Thank you for bringing them to life once more."
