Is Asia Rising in HIV Rates?

As HIV advocates see success in African nations, amfAR warns that “it is increasingly clear that the Asia-Pacific region has fallen behind Africa in its HIV/AIDS response.”

People in Asian countries have less access to both treatment and prevention interventions, particularly for poz pregnant women lacking access to antiretrovirals. In Africa, nearly 90 percent of pregnant women have access to treatment, while in Asia-Pacific regions, it’s less than half.

“The stagnation we see in HIV program coverage in the Asia-Pacific is a reminder to governments, civil society, and donors that much more needs to be done to bring HIV/AIDS under control in the region,” noted
the amfAR report.
